Occupy Wall Street
Beginning in September, 2011, approximately 2,000 activists began camping out in New York City’s Zuccotti Park, calling themselves “Occupy Wall Street” and demanding an end to economic inequality, corporate greed and government corruption. The nonviolent protests struck a chord in the public discourse, introducing new phrases such as “We Are the 99%” and spawned similar protests and camps around the world. However, despite the initial momentum New York’s occupiers were forced out of their camp within two months and the movement had largely died within a year.
