Hurricane Harvey

On August 26, 2017, Hurricane Harvey slammed into eastern Texas; it was the first storm to make landfall in the United States since 2005. The category four hurricane was unprecedented: as the storm hit the coast winds reached 130 miles per hour and over the course of the next two days more than 15 trillion gallons of fell on Texas, ultimately leading to the deaths of at least 89 people. Finally, on August 28 the storm retreated to the Gulf of Mexico, only to return and make landfall again in Louisiana. This photo essay looks at the greater human response in the days immediately following one of the largest storms to ever hit the United States.
